Looks like a long leaved open headed lettuce. This very useful salad plant is popular with today’s chefs. Widely used raw in salads or is sometimes cooked lightly as a delicious spinach substitute. It has a rich, peppery taste, and has an exceptionally strong flavour for a leafy green. In addition to the leaves, the flowers are often used in salads as an edible garnish. The young seed pods and mature seeds are all edible. Pick the young leaves as required over the whole row rather than just one or two plants as this would weaken them.
